|
Rice production costs at farm level increased by about 10% over the period 2001-05. Use of herbicide, paddle and mechanical thresher and promoting mechanical reaper in rice production could help to reduce production cost at least by 8%.

Project: Assessing Rice Yield Gap and Improving The Productivity of Rice in Bangladesh.
|
Rice yield gap between the demonstration plots and farmers' average yield was estimated at 3.00 ton/ha in the drought-prone Rangpur areas. The gap between potential farms and farmers' average (known as yield gap II) was 1.5 t/ha. Differences in some vital factors like, time of planting, seedling age, number of seedling/hill & frequency of top dressing etc. between the demonstration plots and farmers' management/practices were identified as the causes of the aforesaid yield differential.

Project:Development of agricultural
machinery # Developed foot prints levelers were
demonstrated at farmers field in Kapashia, Gazipur
during T. Aman, 2006.
# Two prototypes of power
tiller drawn field levelers were fabricated. Comparative
study was conducted with rotary plough and leveler
in terms of fuel consumption and field capacity.
Test result showed that wooden made leveler (6.0
feet × 0.92 feet) performed well in the muddy soil.
#Coupling systems were developed for BHT (Bangladesh
Hand Tractor) seeder and Indian multi crop planting
machines. Seeding rates for paddy and wheat were
calibrated in the laboratory. Grain breakages were
minimized to 0-0.45% from 4-7% by mixing paddy with
the rice husk / saw dust. Wheat crop established
well for both BHT seeder and Indian multi crop planter.
#Self propelled & PT mounted reapers and a thresher
(BRRI model 3) were tested during Aman 2006. BRRI
weeder, BRRI Kishan weeder and Comilla Co-operative
Karkhana (CCKL) weeder were tested during Boro 2007.
#BRRI Hydrotiller was tested at the BRRI farm during
Boro 2007 and the following data were collected

seed from damage due to water logging.

Project:Milling and processing
technology #Manufactured two dryers of one ton
capacity
#Three premium quality paddy were processed
as unparboiled rice in Bengal auto Rice Mill, Dinajpur.
Six premium quality paddy was supplied by Plant
Breeding Division. Results showed that at least
55% head rice can be recovered if the paddy was
milled as unparboiled rice in large auto mill. This
result needs to be validated for the larger sample
size. #In the micro rice flour mill, the capacitor
starter motor of 1.5 hp was replaced by 4 hp diesel
engine with 6:4 inch pulley. The quality of rice
flour as well as rice cake (pitha) was acceptable.
A sensory evaluation was conducted with GQN division.
#Milling machinery suitable for processing fine
and long grain rice was identified from available
sources. Drying technique for fine and long grain
rice was also reviewed and collected. It is planned
to mill and polish at mill level in Chapai Nawabganj.
#Different engineering and physical properties
of BR5 variety have been determined. Moisture content
= 14.4%, Bulk density = 592.8 kg/m3, Kernel density
= 1090 kg/m3, Porosity = 45.6%, Angle of repose
= 34.17°, Sphericity = 48%, Geometric mean diameter
= 2.86 mm

Project: Development of stores and storage technology
#Seed storage cocoon made of locally available poly-ethylene and racksin was fabricated and tested for storage of seed paddy during last two seasons. Another design of cocoon will be made of improved type of low cost materials and be tested during Boro 2007.
#A structured questionnaire has been designed and tested at Dhirasram village under Gazipur Sadar upazila. About 15 farmers were visited and interviewed for collecting data on seed feed and wastage of rice. Some local storage Depot of Gazipur and Netrokona were visited and collected information on rice storage.

#The highest grain yield was obtained when 2.5 t/ha fresh poultry litter was applied as basal and top dressed @ 1.25 t/ha each at 20 DAT and 20 days before PI stage; followed by 2.5 t/ha as basal application and top dressed with 0.5 t/ha each at 20 DAT and 20 days before PI stage.
#The variety BRRI dhan44 planted with 25 hills/m2, fertilized with recommended rate and weed control by herbicide + 1 HW produced maximum grain yield.
#Premium quality lines BR6908-21-4-5 and IR72810-19-2-2-3 performed well at 80 kg N/ha and gave identical grain yield with BRRI dhan38.
#Organic rice Dhaincha in the Aus season followed by rice cultivation in Aman season without fertilizer produced identical grain yield with BRRI recommended fertilizer management.
