BRRI regional station, Bhanga, Faridpur was established in 1986 for the improvement of deep water transplanted (DWT) rice and rice farming system in the low and medium low Ganga flood plain area. The total land area of this station is 11.46 ha, out of this 9.55 ha is utilize for research and seed production. The station is mainly in lowland area (2 m water depth) with silty-clay soil enriched with organic matter, good for yielding beyond the national average under proper care and management.
Varietal development program research is conducted to develop cold tolerance rice, super high yielding rice (New Plant Type), micronutrient dense rice (high iron and zinc content) and green super rice (GSR). Pedigree nursery, Observational Trail (OT), Preliminary Yield Trail (PYT), Secondary Yield Trail (SYT), Regional Yield Trail (RYT) of these breeding programs were conducted in this station to develop Advance breeding lines. This station also coordinates to conduct the International Network for Genetic Evaluation of Rice (INGER) Trail for rice germplasm exchange and improvement.
Advanced Line Adaptive Research Trail (ALART), Proposed Variety Trail (PVT) and BRRI developed technology is demonstrated in the farmers field of the greater Faridpur region by the Adaptive Research Division is supported by this station.
Stability analysis of BRRI released variety experiment is conducted to determine stability index and bio-physiological factors of BRRI varieties.
Fertilizer management, weed management and water management research is conducted in this station and at farmers field to increase production with economic use of inputs.
Arsenic (As) contamination in tube-well/deep tube-well water is a serious problem in the Faridpur region. Effect of as in grain yield and level of As in grain of different rice variety, effect of As in different water management research is carried on farm in this station.
Rice farming system research is conducted to intensify cropping system and farm level improvement of the farmers in this region.
Seed production and dissemination:
Breeder seed of BRRI dhan28, BRRI dhan29 and BRRI dhan50 is produce in this station and supply to BRRI head quarter. Besides that, truthfully labeled seed is produce and distribute in each upazilla of greater Faridpur districts and among the farmers of North Channel chor area.
Workshop and Training:
To increase the rice production in the greater Faridpur district, a workshop was conducted with DAE personnel’s, Scintist and Media personnel. Day long training is conducted on “Modern technology for rice production” for the farmers and Sub Assistant Agricultural Officers (SAAO) of DAE. Objective of this course is to train up the important concepts, principals and technologies of modern rice production and identify the field problems and thereby up scaling of the knowledge.
